As most argue, if the toponym of Tavernole sul Mella refers to its origin as a point of intersection and stop on roads that connected the valleys, it is likely that the ancient medieval tabernae (tavern), later gave way to hotels that offered accommodation. This is, perhaps, the origin of Casa Fontana, whose architectural structure should date back to the l4th century, as suggested by the beautiful arcade in the inner courtyard on the ground floor with slightly lowered arches and the one on the second floor, stressed by slender local stone columns. All the columns on the ground floor, some of which are walled in, still have fixed the rings that were used to tie the horses. In the Book of the Consortium, in reference to the first half of the l6th century, we read that the artisan who built the tabernacle in the old church, lived in the house ‘in dol Fontana’.
